Who is Ayisha?

I am a portrait artist and writer based in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania.  I take commissions for portraits in graphite and pastel.  My subjects are usually couples and children.

I was born in Canada to American parents; we moved back to Pennsylvania when I turned seven.  I’ve always been interested in the arts, and spent much of my childhood imagining, acting out stories, writing, and drawing.

I first began doing portraits in 2002, and for a few years almost all the art I did was commissioned.  But that didn’t give me much chance to develop or grow as an artist, and art became an unpleasant chore.  So I took a break for five years, only taking 2-3 commissions a year, and otherwise just drawing portraits for my own enjoyment, or for family members.

I’ve been out of school since 2009, and able to devote much more time to drawing.  Starting in May 2010 I have been taking on commissions again. My technique has had a chance to mature over the last few years, and now the work involved in portraiture once again gives me joy.  I am into a new phase of portraits, eager to create work that is alive.  I want to capture not only a likeness, but something of the life and personality of my subject.  I enjoy artwork that is human, that tells a story, so that’s what I strive to create.
